I like to make interactive things.
Most of my development work has been in AS3. I’ve been building in OOP classes for years, usually on the MVC or State Machine patterns, but I like Strategy too. I played around with Javascript in the late 90’s, and I've been doing work in HTML, CSS, and PHP recently. Currently I'm delving into JQuery, Objective C and HTML 5 and I'm building one site in Wordpress and starting another in Drupal. I’m always looking for new things to build and better ways to build them.
When I’m not building interactive objects, I’m designing them. When I’m not designing, I’m working on illustrations.

This site has been brought to you by JQuery, PHP classes
and the letters HTM and L.

Programming in
AS3/AS2 (lots of video, XML, JSON)
HTML, CSS, javascript, PHP
Working in
Adobe Creative Suite
Yes, also emails
Pencil, ink, watercolor on actual paper
Designing sites, banners, motion
Books, textbooks, fonts, ads

What I Like Micro-site

Flash Development

Mudd Puppy, Girls Inc.

Girls Inc needed a Flash microsite that would allow girls to pick their interests from a scrolling menu, or add their own, flip through a dynamically generated flip-book, and then download two pdfs based on their choices. The pdfs are generated in Flash, not on the server.

Lenovo X1 micro site

Flash Development

Stink Digital

The Lenovo micro-site plays a video of the product as it’s used with various features called out based on cue points, resolving to a summary page.
I was one of three developers who brought it to this stage after a major change in the functionality. I was responsible for the navigation, summary page, and for rebuilding the core to be more encapsulated with a clear separation of responsibilities.

Chuck Vanderchuck banners

Flash Development

21 Boom

This series of banners for a new PBS site, Chuck Vanderchuck’s something something Explosion, includes rich media and simple banners. These are primarily animation pieces, but are still completely code-driven. Clouds and star-bursts are added and randomized programatically.

See the Chuck Vanderchuck banners here

Chris Knight Blog

Development

Chris Knight

This year I created a custom theme/site for the personal site of Chris Knight.
Chris needed a Wordpress site that could accommodate all his creative endeavors. There is of course a blog, but also a photo-gallery section and a showcase for his professional work.

The Mechanic Expanding Banner

Flash Development

Maude

The Mechanic (2010) banner is based on the visually more complicated Faster banner, but this banner was release before either the red band trailer or ticket times would be available. It tests every time it loads to see if assets are present before it creates the menu interface.

See the The Mechanic Expanding Banner here

Faster Expanding Banner

Flash Development

Maude

The code for this banner for Faster (2010) had to self-adjust for standard and 728x90 size, and also be easily finessed for changes in the layout. There are 36 posible transitions, based on whether the Rock’s image is present, which way new elements enter, what space is available for buttons. I used the State Machine pattern for this banner for maximum flexibility.

Beardtober

Flash Development

Maude

This site documented Maude’s Beardtober event. The participating men didn’t shave for a month, and each day their beards’s progress was documented. Matt Jennings, the designer, had to be able to easily update photos. And if he missed anything, the site complained about it.

MTV Widget

Flash Development

Maude

MTV’s annual awards show needed a widget, which turned into a mini-application. Voting, watching videos, a twitter feed, tweeting directly from the widget, adding to your Facebook account, and a news feed all in 300x250px. It builds itself on the fly, and could be easily updated for future shows.

The League Season Premiere Widget

Flash Development

Maude

After the introductory video users could generate their own logos and then share those logos with friends through social media and email. Several hundred combinations are possible but only 3 are loaded in at the beginning, and only one at a time thereafter to minimize the use of bandwidth.

Sons of Anarchy Season Premiere Widget

Flash Development

Maude

This widget was developed for the premiere of FX’s television series Sons of Anarchy. Distributed through Facebook, it allowed users to take pictures through their web cams or upload a photo, add one of 6 tattoos, and then share the image through Facebook, Twitter, or email.

CurrentCreative Expanding Banner

Flash Development

Maude

Current TV, an innovative on-line entertainment company, commissioned these banners to promote their new Creative Studios project. Viewers are introduced to the concept through 3 videos and an in-banner map of the virtual studios.

Epsion Avatar Touch Screen

Flash Development

Bobira

This flash piece was a touch screen at a convention promoting Epsilon Advertising’s new marketing approaches. The sound clips and text are XML driven so that the agency could change questions and clips during the convention if necessary.

CEB Banner

Design

Punch Design/Design By Dark

The Corporate Executives Board holds regular conferences which they promote with a flash header and dedicated pages on their website. I’ve been the designer and programmer for their flash zones. This is the banner, using Five3D to create the cube and keep the file size down.

CEB Page Header

Punch Design/Design By Dark

The Corporate Executives Board conferences needed a page header that would communicate excitement and still look mature. This piece uses a Five3D cube and redrawn bitmaps to create its transitions.

Novo Nordisk® Ambassadors Everyday Rollout

Flash Development

Nition

Novo Nordisk, a pharmaceutical company specializing in diabetes and hemophilia, is rolling out a sharepoint site for their local representatives. Working for Nition, a public relations agency, I designed their roll-out items. Novo Nordisk needed a portal design, flash animation, email, and landing page for the introductory link.

Truvada EDetail

Flash Development

Draft FCB

This eDetail started out as a re-skin of Relpax, and then evolved. Whereas Relpax advances based on a voice-over, Truvada is purely animated charts.
Because the eDetail contains internal information it cannot be public. If you want to know more about it please contact me.

Relpax EDetail

Flash Development

Draft FCB

The Relpax eDetail is an on-line app with animated graphs synched to a voice-over. The app either generates a 5-chapter presentation or a 8-chapter presentation depending on a code passed in. I also developed a liquid-layout handler and a Factory/Injection pattern that animates the information based on how the assets are built.
Because the eDetail contains internal information it cannot be public. If you want to know more about it please contact me.

Video Player Proposal

Flash Development

Draft FCB

The video player proposal was built to show a client how existing services and assets could be better leveraged within the existing site. If the video player had developed further, it would have included social media links, which are currently indicated by dead icons. The programming using Papervision as its base.

See the Video Player Proposal here

Dosing Wheel

Flash Development

Draft FCB

The dosing wheel was a part of a touch screen. When the display was not being used, it cycled through an animation that included a sequence of the wheel animating. If a user touched the screen, the wheel would spin, and then permit the user to spin the first wheel.

See the Dosing Wheel here
